Warm Weather, Wildlife and the Wild West on the San Pedro River
At this time of year, the weather is sunny and mild down in southeastern Arizona, making it the perfect time to explore the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.
For history buffs (perhaps on the way to or from the Tombstone Courthouse), there is the Murray Springs Clovis site, where some of the earliest North Americans left evidence of their habitation. Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate dates from the Spanish Colonial period. This presidio (fortress) is the most intact survivor of what was once a network of similar defensive sites built by the Spanish throughout Pima Alterķa or southern Arizona. Nearby, the ghost town of Fairbank once processed the ore from the rich Tombstone mines but now lies in fascinating ruin. All these long-gone people relied on the resource that still makes this place so special: the water of the San Pedro River.
Today, it's mostly wildlife that congregates around the river, including 84 species of mammals, 14 different kinds of fish and 41 kinds of reptiles and amphibians. Fishing is permitted in the San Pedro River with a valid Arizona fishing license. Over 100 different bird species breed here and at this time of year, an additional 250 species are wintering under the clear Arizona skies, making it a haven for winter birdwatching.
The area is lightly developed with hiking and mountain biking trails, interpretive signs and kiosks and restroom facilities at or near the parking areas. A 1930s-era ranch house, called the San Pedro House, serves as a visitor center and bookstore and also offers the area's only wheelchair-accessible facilities. Backcountry camping is permitted for a $2 per night fee; otherwise there is no charge for exploring.
