Viewing the Eclipse from Western Parks
Just hours before sunset on May 20, people from New Mexico west will enjoy a full view of a rare annular eclipse. Visitors at National Parks from Albuquerque, NM to the California coast will enjoy the rare view of the moon casting a shadow across the face of the sun, creating a "ring of fire."
Petroglyph National Monument, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Natural Bridges National Monument will all host educational activities and viewing events. Eclipse viewing parties will be held at Grand Canyon National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Great Basin National Park. At Bryce Canyon National Park, the May 20 eclipse will be the grand finale to the 12th annual Astronomy Festival.
At Redwood National Park, eclipse watchers are encouraged to head for vista points at higher elevations, such as the Redwood Creek Overlook on Bald Hills Road, the Klamath River overlook and the shoulder along Hwy 101 just before Ah Pah Road.

Free Public Events in Santa Fe
Every third Thursday, the Public Lands Information Center in Santa Fe hosts an evening lecture on topics of interest in New Mexico. Our free events often accompanied by a booksigning and informal chat.
This month's topic is "Forgotten Tales of New Mexico." Public historian Ellen Dornan will be offering a talk about the complexities of New Mexico history, answering questions and signing her new book, full of quirky and amazing tales from cross-dressing Buffalo soldiers to the nuclear bomb that fell on Albuquerque.
The NM PLIC is in the BLM New Mexico State Office, 301 Dinosaur Trail in Santa Fe. Doors open at 6:30 and events start at 7 pm. Light refreshments are provided at no charge. All events are open to the public.
If you have any questions about these New Mexico events, feel free to contact Kevin Atkinson at the New Mexico Public Lands Information Center. Call locally at 505-954-2002 or toll-free at 877-276-9404.
